Sponsored Client Project
Usability Testing for Xplor Recreation
Role
UX Research, UX/UI Design
Duration
5 months
Tools
Figma, FigJam, Zoom for Usability Testing
Problem Statement
Xplor Recreation, a cloud-based membership management solution catering to small and midsize clubs and member-based businesses like recreation centers, faces significant usability challenges.
Despite being extensively used in various sectors such as recreation, education, fitness, yoga, music, dance, and martial arts, the product has never undergone comprehensive usability testing; only prototypes have been assessed. The primary users, including front desk staff, managers/administrators, and IT personnel within recreation centers, have distinct roles and requirements, creating a complex usability landscape.
Research Methods

Usability Testing
After the heuristic evaluation is completed, usability testing will be performed on five tasks. The sections below detail the design of the usability testing. The plan, tasks, and scenarios may be revised after the completion of the heuristic evaluation.
The heuristics are mostly based on Neilson Norman Group’s 10 Heuristics, however the client adapted them for their needs.
In Scope Pages
For this project, we were tasked to conduct testing on 4 pages within the Xplor interface: Search Activities, Advanced Reservations, Point of Sale and Account Statement.

Heuristic Evaluation
Each team member completed heuristic evaluations individually and provided a ranking for each heuristic for each page. The team then came together and analyzed the results
We were also provided a severity scale by our sponsor. The severity scale rating offers a structured approach to evaluating issues, ranging from no concerns (5) to critical problems (1)

Usability Testing
In addition to heuristic evaluations, usability testing was conducted to understand user challenges and frustrations better. Nine participants were recruited, and each participant was tasked with completing five main activities in the Xplor system
